Tag clouds and their drawbacks for your blog

Tag clouds or tag clouds are elements that abound in blogs, when you read this post, you will totally change the vision you had of tag clouds, long ago they were one more navigation element much more comfortable to use because we believed that the user it refined the search better and when found in the widget area it occupies a rather important place.

Tag clouds are not good for SEO for two reasons:

  1. They are considered keyword spam, the same words appear on all the blog pages, so they are considered spam even if your site is very mono-themed you can have problems, but in those that have different themes for the robots it is something like if you read: «this is a blog to help you create a ball or improve your blog if your sausage your hair in a way»Tag clouds and their drawbacks for your blog
  2. They destroy your internal linking strategy, if you have spent time creating an internal linking structure with the tag cloud it can randomly disperse the flow of visitors to your blog.

Duplicate content is penalized more and more and the labels are sometimes part of it, some tips to establish the labels of your posts:

Don’t match category names , especially if you use features like removing the word category from permalinks (it’s common in plugins like SEO by Yoast).
Try to make them keywords or searched words , you have to take advantage of the tags as valid keywords.
If your theme does not show the tags, do it yourself but put only the article tags.
Choose singular or plural, feminine or masculine do not duplicate the content this is called by Google vague words and is penalized.
If you use a tag , try to make the literal word appear in the text , if not, it will be considered spam if you abuse it.
Do not put them in the footer because it can be classified as spam, use the footer for other types of information.
An advantage is that they act as a directory of links and it is quite comfortable for visitors, but I recommend that they do it from the categories to improve the flow and link building of your blog.

What is a tag?

In conclusion, unless you talk about a single topic on your blog can be harmful, it is preferable to carry out an internal link strategy within the post itself than for visitors to go from post to post to see if they are right with what they need.
